Criibaby

BIO

Criibaby invites listeners to look deeper within themselves with her genre-bending, intimate songwriting. Jazz-influenced chords and satisfyingly ASMR-like, heavily sidechained “found sounds” style percussion lead up to immersive drops that bring you in and hold you in a warm embrace. Drawing upon neo soul, lofi, jazz, and alternative aesthetics to form something entirely her own, Criibaby’s intricate layers of delicate, emotional vocals and emotionally bare lyricism come together to form a new kind of introspective sonic escapism.

Set for release on June 10, Criibaby’s new project Crii examines the fragile beauty of yearning for human connection while battling internal demons and questioning one’s self worth. The EP is a result of looking at yourself in the mirror and asking the age-old question, is it better to have loved and lost, or never love at all? The project’s nonlinear narrative arc affirms that processing trauma and the baggage & perceptions of self we bring into new relationships is a journey without a map or a predetermined destination. If there’s one message she hopes to impart to listeners, it’s the blunt suggestion that “You don’t always have to have your shit together. Sometimes you need to allow yourself a moment to pause and ask yourself, how does this actually make me feel?” Using a unique songwriting method she describes as possessing “no names, no genders, only the feelings, only the bare truths,” the EP contains only lyrics without pronouns, written from an openly queer perspective in a conscious effort to create more inclusive music.

While some tracks on Crii are about taking the time to fully experience emotions in a constructive way, some are about just giving up and wallowing in loneliness- in a self aware, almost hyperbolic way. Criibaby says, “After listening to brilliantly sad music like Thom Yorke, Phoebe Bridgers, or Portishead and writing a total downer of my own like the title track, ‘crii’ I’m able to process and almost laugh at how depressed I sometimes get. Letting go of my negative emotions through cathartic songwriting feels empowering as I reclaim the internalized hurt and embarrassment of always being called a crybaby. If Brian Eno made music for airports, I make music for crying. That’s just who I am.”

“Crii” is set to be released on all digital streaming platforms on June 10, 2022.
