BIO
Lia is a Maryland-born, Montreal-based singer-songwriter and producer. Her sugary vocals and poetic state of mind have earned her support from outlets such as BBC 1 & 6, CBC, COLORS x Studios, Exclaim!, Nakid Magazine, Dummy Magazine & Triple J Unearthed along with syncs for Samsung SK, MTV, and Netflix’s Sex/Life. Most recently, she’s lent her vocals and lyrics to producers Apashe and IMANU in addition to scoring for film and fronting her band Afternoon Bike Ride. Lia's lyrics explore the individual human experience as well as our collective existence as a species, often inspired by climate change, capitalism, dystopia, life purpose, and love.
Her newest offering, 2024's Motherland, is not only her first solo release in two years, but it is also her debut full-length album. Having released two EP’s while fronting her band Afternoon Bike Ride and collaborating with electronic artists such as Apashe and Imanu, she took 2023 to build and finalize Motherland, an electronic concept album about climate change and maternalization. With multiple family-related undertakings throughout her twenties (from caring for her mother with cancer to caring for her father with dementia), she almost shelved this solo project until she received funding from the Canadian government. We are grateful this album is seeing the light of day. And what a light it is. Throughout the ten tracks, Lia provide's heartfelt downtempo electronica and dreamy synth pop. A mystical voice of sincere urgency and a message that needs to be heard.

Speaking out about exponential population growth and the maldistribution of resources ("Single Digit Story") to greed of humanity ("Loon Moon") to self-destruction from humans ("Poltergeist") to capitalism and industrialization ("Highland"), this is just as much an album about caring for family as it is an album about caring for humanity, where Lia urges for natural regeneration. Growth. An end to the factory-assembled chaos. Some songs are like pleas while others are neoclassical spiritual meditations. What might exist after humans inevitably die off? What can be done while we're still here? This album, Motherland, is a reflection, a mission statement, a mantra. An angelic voice, shouting into the night, offering a hand to hold to help the heal.
